Trade primer 3

Licenses, certifications and certificates: three different things

Three similar-sounding words describe very different credentials, and mixing them up can be costly.

Licenses

Some trades, such as electrical work or cosmetology, need a state license. Requirements vary by state and often include hours of supervised work and an exam.

Certifications

Industry groups certify skills through exams. A certification can be voluntary but valued by employers.

Certificates

A school certificate shows you completed a program. It may prepare you for a license or certification exam, but it is not the same thing.

Check before you enroll

Your state licensing board can tell you what is required for the work you want, which helps you choose a program that leads there.
