Trade primer 2

Paying for a trade or technical program

Short technical programs can use many of the same funding sources as college degrees, but there are a few rules worth knowing first.

Is the program eligible

Federal aid generally requires an eligible school and a program that meets minimum length rules. The school’s financial aid office can say whether its program qualifies.

Workforce funding

Local workforce development boards, funded through a federal law called WIOA, can help pay for training in in-demand fields. Each board sets its own process.

Employer help

Some employers pay for training or reimburse tuition, often with a commitment to stay for a period afterward. Read those terms before you sign.

Compare total cost

Look past tuition to tools, uniforms, licensing exam fees and travel. A program that seems cheaper can cost more once everything is counted.
